Mathew Pulickal,
Registered Physiotherapist
Mathew Pulickal is a registered physiotherapist and has a widespread background in the treatment and rehabilitation of numerous injuries, chronic pain issues, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), as well as injuries that are caused from work, sport and a variety of other activities and/or pathologies. There are only a handful of certified intramuscular stimulation (www.istop.org) medical professionals in Ontario. Besides providing IMS services, Mathew is one of the few Donjoy (www.donjoy.ca) custom knee brace fitters in Ottawa and is also trained to fit custom orthotics. He provides all these service at our Orleans physiotherapy, Barrhaven physiotherapy and Westboro physiotherapy locations.
Mathew obtained an undergraduate degree in Human Kinetics as well as an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa in 1997. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy and a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alberta in 2001. In 2004, Mathew obtained his Masters degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Alberta. In addition to these degrees, he is also a Certified Exercise Physiologist (www.csep.ca) and is certified in Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) therapy. He is in the process of completing his final Manual Therapy certifications in order to obtain his Advanced Manual Therapy diploma as well. Presently he works at the Orleans physiotherapy, Barrhaven physiotherapy, and Westboro physiotherapy locations.
Mathew has a very extensive background in the fields of sports, rehabilitation and chronic pain. He was a national level track and field sprinter and presently is a running consultant for a few national level runners. Mathew has been doing running evaluations for clients for many years and is our only running evaluator for the company. Running evaluations are performed at the Barrhaven physiotherapy, Orleans physiotherapy, and Westboro physiotherapy locations. Over the past eleven years, Mathew has been certified as an Exercise Physiologist under the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP). He provides assessments, evaluations, prescribes conditioning exercises, and offers exercise supervision and monitoring, for the purpose of improving health, function, work and sport performance.
Mathew has been a physical therapist for the following events and teams: World Track and Field Games, World University Games, Pan American Games, NHL, CFL, CJFL, World Cup Triathlon, World University Wrestling Games, World Karate Championships, FIFA Soccer World Cup U21 and U19, University Varsity and CIS National Championships (Basketball, Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Football, Rugby, Soccer, Track & Field, Volleyball, Wrestling), and Dukes Football.
Mathew believes that providing one- on- one care at an affordable price with the utmost quality has allowed him to create a rehabilitation program unique to Ottawa.
Shawn Chopra,
Registered Physiotherapist
Shawn Chopra has added a spark of youthfulness to the Ottawa Physiotherapy & Sport Clinics and presently spends most of his time at the Barrhaven Physiotherapy Clinic. Shawn graduated with a B.Sc. in Physiotherapy from the University of Ottawa in 2009, after completing a wide-range of clinical rotations from pediatrics to cardiology and sports medicine. Aside from his clinical work, primarily at the Barrhaven location, Shawn is an avid researcher. To date he has completed 3 medical journal papers (with the University of British Columbia, University of Chicago, and University of Ottawa) on various topics including fatigue, postural control, orthopedics, and blood pathology. Shawn is presently pursing his Manual Therapy certifications and is one of the many fluently bilingual members of the Barrhaven Physiotherapy Clinic's team.
In his free time, Shawn enjoys playing basketball, listening to good music, playing with technology, and travelling.
Nick Antaya,
Registered Physiotherapist
Nick graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Masters Degree in Physiotherapy in 2009, where he was awarded the Sheila Muir Webb award, a prize given to the graduating student with the best performance in clinical practice during the last year of studies. Prior to this, he had obtained his Undergraduate Honours Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Ottawa in 2007. Nick joined the Barrhaven Physiotherapy Clinic in 2009 and has quickly established himself in the Barrhaven area.
Highly interested in the fields of sports and orthopedic physiotherapy, Nick is also working as a therapist with the Ottawa Junior Riders Football Club. Other clinical interests include chronic pain, and how improving the biomechanics of the body can help decrease the symptoms associated with such conditions. Nick has already started specializing in Manual Therapy from the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapy. He is eager to further increase his knowledge in those fields by continuing to take post graduate classes and hopes to obtain his Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) certification as well.
Nick believes his strong background in competitive sports enables him to better understand the biomechanics involved in injuries, and to therefore create efficient interventions for his clients involving exercise prescription and manual therapy.
Living an active lifestyle, he enjoys long distance running (he is a half marathoner and soon to be marathoner), golf, going to the gym, soccer, volleyball and canoeing. Nick is looking forward to treating a wide variety of patients with different conditions, and is excited at the promising career in front of him. He is fluently bilingual and works in the Barrhaven Physiotherapy Clinic.
Shane Maley,
Registered Physiotherapist
Shane Maley graduated from the bilingual University of Ottawa BSc. PT program in 2008. Following a strong clinical interest in sports and orthopaedic physiotherapy, Shane has been involved with the National Capital District unit of both Sport Physiotherapy Canada and the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Presently, Shane works at the Westboro physiotherapy location and is also fluently bilingual.
As a former national level cross country ski racer, Shane leads an active lifestyle. His passions are cross country and alpine skiing, running, road and mountain cycling, triathlon, paddling, backpacking and just about anything else Gatineau park and the landscapes that our region have to offer. Because of Shane's extensive experience in competitive cycling, he obtained his Bike Fitting Certification and has been performing bike fittings at our Westboro physiotherapy location. With his experience as a national level cross country ski racer, Shane also performs cross country ski evaluations at the Ottawa Physiotherapy and Sport Clinics' Westboro physiotherapy location.
Marie-Élise Samson Buchan,
Registered Physiotherapist
Marie-Élise obtained her B.Sc. PT from the University of Ottawa in 2009. She is a fully bilingual physiotherapist dedicated to her patients and her work. She has a wide range of knowledge in musculoskeletal treatments having taken many advanced post graduate educational classes in the field.
As a former graduate of the ballet program at the School of Dance, Marie-Élise is aware of the challenges encountered by dancers as well as by other high level athletes. She has been a physiotherapist for the University of Ottawa Geegee's Football Team and with the regional Myers Riders Football team. Marie-Élise also has broad experience with canoe-camping, hiking, winter camping and skiing and feels this experience makes her a great fit at our Westboro physiotherapy location.
Marie-Élise enhanced her social skills as a tour guide on Parliament Hill, as Communications Coordinator with the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa and as a guide at Vimy Ridge National Historic Site in France during her undergraduate degree. She has a wide variety of interests ranging from history to politics to the arts and to sports.
Jason Walsh,
Registered Massage Therapist
Jason is a Registered Massage Therapist and a graduate of Algonquin College. He is a member of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and the Ontario Massage Therapy Association. Jason has worked with veterans at the Perley Rideau Health Centre, pre and post-natal mothers at the Civic hospital and with elite athletes at Algonquin College and Carleton University.
Jason has developed a variety of massage skills, including Joint Mobilisations to increase range of motion and decrease joint pain and Lymphatic drainage to decrease swelling and increase circulation. Using general Swedish massage techniques, Jason can help restore muscle imbalance, release holding patterns, and decrease stress in areas such as head, neck and shoulders. Jason has been providing massage therapy in the Westboro physiotherapy and Barrhaven physiotherapy locations since 2009.
Jason's lifelong interest in sports has carried over into his Massage Therapy practice and he is presently studying for a certificate in Sport Massage. He believes the use of Massage Therapy in one's life, whether for stress or for sport, can greatly improve a person's health and well-being. Jason presently works at both our Barrhaven physiotherapy and Westboro physiotherapy locations.
